“Paper Works” is the title of a new group show at the Arts Sutton Gallery in downtown Sutton. The exhibition features new work by three veteran artists, Sylvia Bertolini, Jacques Clément and Joanne Kielo.
While each of these three artists works with paper, each has his own distinctive style and technique.
Sylvia Bertolini (right) chooses papier maché as her medium. Most of her works are representations of special moments and people within in her own life. They may be considered portraits, but one does not need to know the people portrayed to appreciate these pieces. They are vibrant, fun, highly original works of art. Bertolini's ease with this medium is obvious and the results are masterful.
Jacques Clément’s works are wall-mounted accordion-like pieces which convey the artist's message through a series of painted images. Clément’s pieces are stunning. One in particular (above) takes up an entire wall and gives the impression that it is done in gold leaf.
Joanne Kielo, the third artist in this show, attaches her own hand-made paper to metal frames that resemble sections of wire fencing. The paper itself is coloured and textured to resemble different metals. The resulting abstract sculptures -- the largest in the show hangs in three parts from the ceiling and takes up much of the room (right) -- are impressive.

”Paper Works” runs until November 5, 2006, and is well worth a visit. Arts Sutton Gallery is located at 7 Academy Street, Sutton. Opening hours are from Thursday to Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Entry to the gallery is free. For more information, visit www.artssutton.com.
