BALDWIN'S MILLS UNITED CHURCH RE-OPENS

(July 7, 2006)

Matthew Farfan

The historic United Church in Baldwin's Mills has just been re-opened after several years of restoration and intensive fundraising efforts on the part of local residents, the Stanstead Journal reported this week.

Built as a Methodist Church 118 years ago, the picturesque little church, which sits in sight of Baldwin Pond, was declared unsafe by the church's insurers. It was then that trustees and local people decided to act. Organizer Brenda Hartwell, the Journal reported, said that the response was "terrific."

Over $40,000 was raised in three years through direct mail appeals and fundraising bake sales, garage sales, and other events.

New support beams have been added to the steeple, which was in danger of collapse, the foundation has been repaired, windows have been restored, and a wheelchair ramp has been added.

At the grand re-opening this past Sunday, over 100 people crowded into the little church. Weekly services will be held in the church every Sunday throughout the summer. Thereafter, services will be held at the church hall or in private homes.
