CANADA DAY IN HATLEY

(July 3, 2006)

Matthew Farfan

Mother nature cooperated yet again this year for another successful, crowded Canada Day in the little village of Hatley. The event, which is almost a hundred years old, has become a popular tradition for Townshippers from all across the region. Thousands of people flock to Hatley each year to celebrate the anniversary of Confederation.

This year, as ever, the parade was the highlight of the day, and the parade route was lined with people on both sides of the street.

The theme of the day was "Four Seasons in Hatley." A variety of colourful floats, marching groups, and a procession of antique cars, made up the bulk of the parade. But the biggest crowd-pleaser seems to have been the horses.

Following the parade, a number of activities were scheduled, including speeches by dignitaries, a Black Watch sword dance demonstration, Irish dancers from Richmond, games and races, a book sale, and music, all followed by a fireworks display at dusk.

A flea market and canteen were popular attractions on the south side of Hatley Common, under the shade of the splendid old maple trees that overhang the historic Main Street.
