HISTORIC CHRIST CHURCH GETS A NEW ROOF
(August 18, 2004)

Matthew Farfan

Historic Christ Church in Stanstead will soon be getting a brand new roof. Trustees of this Anglican Church have been working diligently for three years to complete the necessary paperwork to satisfy the provincial government, which will be footing about eighty percent of the bill, which is estimated at $200,000.

Built in 1858-1859, with a distinctive medieval-style bell tower added to commemorate the church's fiftieth anniversary in 1909, Christ Church is considered one of the architectural gems of Stanstead. Known for its Gothic Revival architecture and its stained glass, the church is also one of only a handful in the Townships built of fieldstone. It has also faired quite well over the years, testament to the skills of its builders.

Work is now under way to remove the existing roof, which is made up of asbestos tiles and which replaced the original roof of cedar shingles. The job requires a team of specialists trained to dispose of the old asbestos tiles safely. The new roof will be of tin. Work is expected to take several weeks.
