DECELLES COVERED BRIDGE UNDER REPAIR
(March 20, 2007)

Matthew Farfan

The Decelles Bridge, a picturesque covered bridge on Fortin Road, just east of Adamsville (Brigham), is currently undergoing some much-needed restoration work, reports correspondent (and former Quebec Covered Bridge Society president) Gérald Arbour. Repairs include replacement of sections of the bridge's siding, portals and interior braces and other structural elements.

Spanning the Yamaska River, the bridge is one of only three covered bridges still standing in what was once Brome County. Built in 1938, the bridge measures 32 metres (106 feet) in length and was constructed in the common Town lattice style.

The Decelles Bridge crosses the river in a fairly low, flat spot. Because of this, it is often subjected to spring flooding and ice jams. Fortunately the river has never been powerful enough at this location to carry the bridge away during these periods.
