GEORGEVILLE-FITCH BAY ART FESTIVAL KICKS OFF 2ND EDITION
(July 26, 2004)

Matthew Farfan

The Georgeville-Fitch Bay Festival of Arts has just kicked off its second season. Back by popular demand, the festival includes five group shows featuring forty artists working in and around the splendid setting of the eastern shore of Lake Memphremagog. The 22-km tour, easily completed in one day, takes art lovers in a circle from Georgeville to Fitch Bay. There is some stunning scenery and delightful art all along the way.

Right: Art lovers chat with artists at Murray Memorial Hall in Georgeville.

Exhibition sites along the tour include the town hall in Fitch Bay (a magnificent former church); the old Fitch Bay elementary school (now the community centre); Murray Memorial Hall in Georgeville; the Georgeville Historical Society (an early general store overlooking Copp Square); and finally, the Elephant Barn on Magoon Point Road, south of Georgeville.

Visitors on this tour will not be disappointed, as some exceptional artists are represented. For example, the cabinet work of Niels Jensen, on display at the Fitch Bay Town Hall (left), is exquisite. Jensen is a craftsman in every sense of the word, and the pride he takes in his work is obvious.

At Murray Memorial Hall, Virginia Cope's oil pantings are always a favourite. Her mastery of colour may be seen in her wonderful floral landscapes (right).

Photographer Mary Landry; sculptor Chick Schwartz; painter Christine Pelzer... Of course, there are far too many talented artists on this tour to mention them all here. Art lovers should check out their work for themselves. The tour runs for nine days from July 24 through August 1. Maps are available at most outlets in the area.
