MANSUR SCHOOLHOUSE GETS CASH FROM TOWNSHIPPERS' FOUNDATION
(June 7, 2004)

The historic Mansur Schoolhouse in Stanstead East is the recipient of a grant from the Townshippers' Foundation. At a small ceremony outside the one-room school this week, Elane Wilson accepted a cheque for an undisclosed amount from Foundation Board Member Matthew Farfan.

Wilson, who is President of the local branch of the Women's Institute, which has looked after the school since the 1920s, said that the grant would go a long way towards restoring the old building. "God bless you," she said, "this is wonderful."

Built in 1819, the Mansur school is one of the oldest remaining pioneer schoolhouses in the province. Though it no longer serves as a school, it does still receive children from local elementary schools who spend the day re-enacting life in the old-time schoolhouse. Children, parents and teachers alike always find it a rewarding experience.

The Mansur school has been the focus of a restoration campaign, carried out over the past year by the Women's Institute. The group has nearly reached its target, but still has a way to go. If you would like to donate, please call Elane Wilson at (819) 876-2297.
