The Stanstead Women's Institute held an open house yesterday at the venerable Mansur (or Red Brick) School in Stanstead East. A good crowd was on hand to sample the cookies and cakes that the ladies had prepared as a way of raising funds for further restoration work on the former one-room schoolhouse, which dates to 1819.
One of the oldest schoolhouses in the province, the Mansur School has been in the care of the Women's Institute for the past seventy-eight years.
The building was the focus of a major fund-raising campaign a few years ago, which allowed for some much needed repair work to be done on the aging structure. Much needs to be done still, however, including work on the foundation and brick walls.
