SOCIÉTÉ DE GÉNÉALOGIE DES CANTONS-DE-L'EST
 

DATE FOUNDED:
1968 (Inc. 1976)

MISSION:
A membership- and volunteer-based organization whose motto is "Working Together to Discover Our Ancestral Roots," the Société de généalogie's primary goal is to increase genealogical knowledge and to enable its members to add to their family history. The Society sees itself as a kind of "virtual museum" of family history for the region. Revenues from memberships and publication sales go towards publishing the Society's periodical, L'Entraide généalogique, and other monographs, and for building the reference collection. Members volunteer their time producing publications and offering assistance to researchers.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION:
Located in the historic former Post Office building (1885), in downtown Sherbrooke.

COLLECTIONS:
An outstanding collection of genealogical reference material (6,000 volumes; 6,000 microfilm reels) includes: printed and manuscript genealogies; parish and local histories; directories of marriages, baptisms, and burials (Quebec, Canada, USA); Canadian and American genealogical and historical periodicals; publications from the National Archives of Canada and the Archives nationales du Québec; census records; notarial archives; family histories; and a database of 1,000,000 baptisms, marriages, and burials. The Society also has an important collection of microforms, formerly held at the Archives nationales du Québec, Centre de l'Estrie.

SPECIAL ACTIVITIES:
Monthly evening meetings at the Éva-Sénécal Library (420 Marquette, Sherbrooke), with members and invited guests discussing their research (please inquire for dates and conference topics). A social evening is held in December. Genealogical workshops are held at the Society Library (inquire for dates and fees). Miscellaneous publications. Reference service provided by volunteers. Participation at the Fête du patrimoine de Sherbrooke.

PUBLICATIONS:
Numerous books are available for sale (please inquire for list of titles and prices).
The Society's periodical, L'Entraide généalogique, is published 4 times a year, and is free to members.

 

BUSINESS HOURS:
Summer:
Tuesday to Friday, 1 to 5 p.m.
Saturday, 12 noon to 4 p.m.
Other times of year:
Tuesday-Saturday, 1 to 5 p.m.
Wednesday evenings, 7 to 10 p.m.
Closed from June 24 to July 9; and from Christmas through New Year's Day, and on other holidays.

ENTRY FEES / MEMBERSHIP:
Membership: $40.00. Spouse or student: $20.00. Non-members may use the library for $8.00 per day. Access to the microfilm room is $15.00 per year for members.
