CAPELTON MINES

MISSION:
This private, for-profit site interprets the industrial history and geology of the mines and offers visitors a fun and educational visit below the earth's surface.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION:
a) Capelton Mines. Situated on a 600-acre wooded site. A major tourist attraction.

b) Museum. Adjacent to the reception building, the museum showcases the history of the Albert, Eustis, and Capelton Mines, from 1865 to the closure of the last mine in 1939, and the later reopening of the Capelton Mine for tourism purposes in 1995.

c) Reception / Boutique / Snack Bar.
d) Interpretive Trails.

e) Picnic area (near the covered bridge over the Massawippi River).

SPECIAL ACTIVITIES:
Guided tours: Like old-time miners, visitors are brought to the mine site by wagon, for a two-hour subterranean visit. During the tour, they will discover the industrial history of the oldest copper mine in Quebec, the rough lifestyle of the miners, the geology of stalactites and stalagmites, and the extraordinary colours caused by the slow dripping of underground water. Boots, raincoat, and miners' hats are provided. Other activities: Underground concerts (please inquire for schedule and prices). Interpretive exhibitions. Children and groups welcome. Bicycle rentals (the Mine is on the route of a bike path linking North Hatley to Lennoxville and Sherbrooke). Note: In all seasons, bring a sweater, as summer and winter temperatures in the mine are about 9 degrees C.

Monday-Sunday, 8:30 to 4:30 p.m. (first tour: 10 a.m.).

ENTRY FEES / MEMBERSHIP:
General admission (Mine): $17.20. Children (ages 6 to 15): $10.20. Family (2 adults; 2 children): $39.95. Extra child: $5.75. Reservations preferred.
Entry to the Museum: Free.
Concert in the mine: Please inquire.
