ASBESTOS MINERAL MUSEUM

MISSION:
Located in the Town of Asbestos, a short distance from the two-kilometre-wide open-air asbestos mine, the Asbestos Mineral Museum exhibits the rocks and minerals found in the local Jeffrey Mine (operating since 1879). The museum documents the mining tradition of the area and seeks to foster an awareness of the richness of local chrysotile asbestos deposits.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION:
a) Museum: Exhibition rooms, video presentation room, workshops, offices.
b) Mineral site (property of JM Asbestos). Off-site, in St-Barnaby sector.
c) Lookout site (property of Mine Jeffrey Inc.) at the corner of St-Luc Boulevard and Panneton Street.



COLLECTIONS:

Rocks and minerals found at the Jeffrey Mine. Reference collection of rock types found elsewhere in the Eastern Townships. Asbestos-based industrial and commercial products. Instruments used in field surveys and in the detection of asbestos deposits. Photos and documents illustrating the history of the Jeffrey Mine.

We are always seeking the following items:
Samples of asbestos-based products from the Old Factory; Photos of workers, single or in groups, at work; Copies of Entre-Nous, JM Producer, etc.; Objects relating to the history of the Mine; Quarter-Century Club programs, photos, objects and articals;
Photos of the Mine and Departments; Reminiscences of retired workers; Postcards.

  SPECIAL ACTIVITIES:
Guided and self-guided tours. Permanent and temporary exhibitions. School, tour, community and servuce groups welcome (by reservation only). Identification of rocks and minerals. Educational workshops (primarily for grades 4 to 6) -- (includes field-trips to a mineral site, a 200-ton dump truck, and the Mine lookout). Participation in the Annual Mineral Fair, associated with the Festival des Gourmands (third weekend in August), in cooperation with the Asbestos Mineral Club.

General admission: $4.00. Students (13-17): $2.00. Children: Free.
