MISSISQUOI MUSEUM (MISSISQUOI HISTORICAL SOCIETY)

DATE FOUNDED:
1899

MISSION:
Missisquoi Museum, run by the Missisquoi Historical Society, collects, preserves, researches, exhibits, and publishes items of interest to the historical development of Missisquoi County and surrounding areas. Of particular interest is the history of the United Empire Loyalists who settled the region, and of the other early settlers from the United States.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION:
Three separate buildings within easy walking distance make up the Museum.
a) The Cornell Grist Mill (1830), the main building, houses the bulk of the museum's artifacts, as well as exhibition and office space. Many artifacts in the Mill testify to the Loyalists' impact on the region. Other notable exhibits pertain to the Fenian Raids of 1866 & 1870. Of special interest are the whimsical folk carvings (1920s) of a travelling circus, by Charles and Florence Millard.

b) Hodge's Store (mid-1800s), just up the street from the Mill, is an "Old Time Country Store." Hodge's contains much of its original Depression-era merchandise.

c) The Annex (Bill's Barn), the third building in the complex, contains a large collection of carriages, farm equipment, an antique fire engine, and much more. (**Closed for repairs in 2005)

Also located on the Mill property:

d) Archives / Library.

e) Boutique.

f) Picnic grounds.

g) The Society also manages 22 early cemeteries, including a former slave cemetery (one of only a few in Canada), and 2 historic monuments, including one commemorating the Battle of Eccles Hill (1870).
