DATE FOUNDED:
1982.
MISSION:
This federal National Historic Site commemorates the life and career
of the Right Honorable Louis S. St-Laurent (1882-1973), who served
as Prime Minister of Canada from 1948-1957, and who was born and
raised in Compton.
PHYSICAL
DESCRIPTION:
a) The Jean-Baptiste-Moïse St-Laurent General Sore, once run
by St-Laurent's father, takes visitors to the world of St-Laurent's
youth. Original counters and shelves feature reproductions of items
that would have been for sale at the start of the 20th century.
Conversation around the stove, whalebone corsets, chamber pots,
and washboards are just a few of the details that help recreate
the atmosphere of those days.
b) A warehouse adjacent to the old store features a 20-minute multimedia
show that recounts the illustrious life and legal and political
careers of one of Canada's most beloved Prime Ministers.
c) The St-Laurent home contains over 2,500 artifacts that belonged
to the St-Laurent family. Objects and furnishings recreate the setting
in which Louis St-Laurent was raised. Visitors can also learn about
the cultural and social history of the Eastern Townships, and about
what made this area so rich and prosperous.
d) Boutique L'Armoire (located in the old summer kitchen).
e) Archives (by appointment only).
f) Landscaped gardens.
COLLECTIONS:
(See above).
SPECIAL ACTIVITIES:
Guided tours. Special summer events include: a farmer's market,
corn roasts, demonstrations in period costume, and special exhibits.
On Canada Day (July 1st), visitors may tour the site free of charge.
For an animated visit on Sunday afternoons, visitors may meet "Lorenzo,"
the clerk in the St-Laurent store, and "Miss Émilienne,"
the St-Laurents' maid. Class trips are encouraged, as the site features
a variety of educational activities which allow students to experience
old-time life and, in a light-hearted way, to compare and discuss
the differences between those days and our own. Teaching guides
and tour books are provided, so that teachers can prepare students
in advance, introduce a personal element to the program, and ensure
follow-up (please call for details).
