INTERNATIONAL DRACONTOLOGY SOCIETY
OF LAKE MEMPHREMAGOG

DATE FOUNDED:
1986

MISSION:
The mission of this Society is to study and document sightings of the legendary sea-serpent, known in days past as the "Sea Serpent of Lake Memphremagog" or the "Anaconda," and in recent years as "Memphré." Dracontology is an old science, but has only been known since 1985 by this particular word. It is a branch of crypto-zoology, the study of hidden animals. Its object is to determine whether the "animal" in question is real, fabricated, natural, legendary, or symbolic. The International Dracontology Society of Lake Memphremagog keeps records of all reported sightings. Modern sightings must be either signed or recorded on tape.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION:
Archives.

COLLECTIONS:
Documentary "evidence" pertaining to the legendary Memphré. Sources include books and other printed and manuscript material, as well as written or recorded testimony.

SPECIAL ACTIVITIES:
Recording sworn sightings of Memphré. Promoting the monster legend and the lake in general. In 1995, the Society designed a pictogram that has been placed at a number of locations around Lake Memphremagog to encourage passers-by to scrutinize the lake closely in case they sight Memphré. Founder-President Jacques Boisvert is a scuba diver who has logged over 5,000 dives in the lake in the pursuit of lake history and of Memphré. He has discovered much about the lake but has yet to see Memphré.
