A regional mission
The Eastern Townships Research Centre (ETRC) is an incorporated, not for-profit, organization located at Bishop's University. Its mission is to further multidisciplinary research into the history and culture of the Eastern Townships region of Quebec, and to preserve the region's English-speaking archival heritage.

COLLECTIONS:
An extensive collection includes publications, genealogical sources, photographs, postcards, maps, plans, manuscript material, and audio-visual documentation pertaining to the history of the Eastern Townships and its communities. The Archives contain over 200 collections.

SPECIAL ACTIVITIES:
The ETRC awards research grants through funds provided by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council under its Aid to Small Universities Program. It sponsors research on the Eastern Townships region by Bishop's faculty and librarians, in such fields as geography, history, business, sociology, education, psychology, art and architectural history, environmental studies, and women's studies.

Since its inception in 1982, the ETRC has supported over 100 research projects by Bishop's University faculty members, administered over $300,000 in research funding and provided research facilities for scholars from around the world.

One of the Eastern Townships Research Centre’s principal objectives is the dissemination of research findings. This is accomplished through its bilingual publications and the sponsoring of lectures and conferences. Every fall, the ETRC presents the Robin Burns Lecture in honour of Robin Burns (1944-1998), one of the founders of the ETRC and a professor of Canadian History at Bishop's University.

The ETRC's publications include the Journal of Eastern Townships Studies/Revue d'études des Cantons de l'Est (JETS/RECE), a bilingual interdisciplinary journal devoted to the dissemination of research on the Eastern Townships of Quebec. This scholarly journal publishes articles, research notes, reviews, personal accounts and descriptions of archival fonds in both English and French. The ETRC also publishes a bilingual newsletter, and several scholarly and research tools for archival and genealogical research.

The Legacy of the Past
The Archives Department of the Eastern Townships Research Centre is devoted to the conservation and promotion of the region's rich and colourful heritage. The Archives Department acquires, processes, disseminates, and conserves the archival heritage of Quebec's Eastern Townships for the purpose of research and teaching. A variety of documents such as, photographs, postcards, maps, plans, and audio-visual material are made available to researchers. R esearch assistance is also provided to genealogists tracing their family roots. The Archives Department is accredited by Quebec's ministère de la Culture et des Communications since 1991.

Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. to 12 noon; 1 to 4:30 p.m. (appointments are required for consultations of archival documents; library and microform material may be consulted without appointment. Material is not permitted to leave the Centre).

ENTRY FEES / MEMBERSHIP:
The Research Centre does not charge membership, research, or entry fees.
