LAKE MASSAWIPPI AREA HISTORICAL SOCIETY

2003

MISSION:
To promote knowledge of the history and genealogy of the region surrounding Lake Massawippi, including the municipalities of Ayer's Cliff, Hatley, North Hatley, Ste-Catherine-de-Hatley and the Township of Hatley.

To bring together people interested in regional history and prepared to participate in meetings, studies, research and other activities with a view to better understanding the history of the vicinity surrounding Lake Massawippi.

To promote the interest of the local population in important events which have marked the emergence and development of the area.

To oversee the preservation and appreciation of sites, monuments, documents and other historical artifacts.

To publish and distribute or cause to be published and distributed any article, periodical, newsletter, brochure, journal, commemorative book or other written material depicting facts (including statistics) or past events relating to the life and customs of the local population.

To erect monuments or plaques and to maintain a database of road or street names commemorating events or people who have had an impact on the history of the region.

To promote educational visits and research on local history and, where possible, supply to institutions the appropriate information and reference material.

To encourage the promotion of local history in cultural or tourism-related initiatives.

SPECIAL ACTIVITIES:
The Society sponsors a number of activities related to history and genealogy. These include general meetings with guest speakers, genealogical workshops, seminars for French-language students who are learning English at local institutions, and displays on aspects of the history of the area surrounding Lake Massawippi. Also: genealogical research for people searching their family trees (please inquire for information and fees).

Reflections (biennial bulletin). Free to members; $2.00 for non-members.
Historic booklets on Ayer's Cliff and North Hatley: $3.00 each.
North Hatley: A Centennial Reflection, 1897-1997: $30.00.
Histoire Centenaire de Ste-Catherine-de-Hatley, 1901-2001: $30.00.
