SOCIÉTÉ D'HISTOIRE DES SIX CANTONS

DATE FOUNDED:
1977

MISSION:
To sensitize the residents of Acton Vale and area to the importance of preserving and understanding the history and heritage of the townships of Acton, Roxton, Upton, Durham, Wickham, and Grantham; to bring together people interested in researching regional history; to collaborate with different groups in the region, and with other historical societies; and to develop an archive of regional historical material.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION:

COLLECTIONS:
Reference books, books on local and regional history, documents on local organizations, census records, photographs, La Pensée (the regional newspaper), microfilms, and historic maps of the region (mainly Acton).

SPECIAL ACTIVITIES:
One of the Society's greatest successes was forming the Société de la Gare, which was instrumental in saving the old train station in Acton Vale. Each year, with the help of the region's Caisses populaires, the Society publishes a historic calendar, an initiative that has rekindled interest in local heritage, and that has been imitated in other areas. The Society has mounted several exhibitions of early photography, documents, and artifacts; worked closely with local schools; and provided technical assistance to parishes publishing souvenir albums. In the fall, the Society hosts an open-house at the Archives. In the spring, it holds an heirloom identification evening. Volunteers are usually available to assist researchers.
